Academic Curriculum

At St Wystan’s School, learning is fun, child-centred and engaging. Maths is taught on a daily basis to ensure core skills are consolidated and extended through a mastery approach. Literacy skills such as reading and writing in our English lessons are also covered daily. Our balanced curriculum ensures that children learn subjects such as Science, French, RE, Humanities, Art and Design, PE, Music and Personal, Social Health and Citizenship Education (PSHE) each week.

We have developed a creative topic-based curriculum, which encourages learning from a Geography or History focus. This allows children to achieve a depth of understanding in each curriculum area that is relatable and exciting. We focus on embedding a ‘Growth Mindset’ within our learners from a young age through our Habits For Learning Programme. This looks to develop skills such as persistence, creativity, positive thinking and resilience, which we believe are key for a child’s success.

Our curriculum is broadly based on the National Curriculum, yet allows heightened opportunities through workshops, trips, visitors and more, which bring learning to life. To promote excellence across the curriculum, children may also participate in art exhibitions and sports fixtures, as well as musical and theatrical performances.

Learning Support

We are committed to ensuring that all pupils reach their full potential, including those with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND). If a pupil is diagnosed with a specific learning difficulty, our SENDCo works closely with the child’s class teacher to set individual targets and measure progress. Extra support and precision teaching interventions may be offered in class, in small groups or individually.
