Upper School for children aged 7 to 11 years

In the Upper school the core subjects of English, Maths and Science are gradually developed leading to specialist teaching in Years 5 and 6. A full range of National Curriculum subjects is taught with French, Music and PE taught by specialist teachers. Our ICT suite is fully networked, as is the whole school, and incorporates an interactive whiteboard. This allows ICT to be included across the curriculum as well as there being specific skill based lessons. Our teaching and learning strategy is to give opportunity and experience to children of all abilities, providing stimulating and motivating lessons with the emphasis on diversity and creativity.

As the children progress through the school they are encouraged to become individuals, accepting more responsibility for their actions and learning, whilst demonstrating a sense of community and mutual respect. By Year 6 the pupils are ready to assume positions of responsibility, which include Prefects, House Captains, Sports Captains and Head Boy and Girl. They are expected to be positive role models for the younger children in the school and to lead by example.

Year 6 are also given individual attention in preparation for a wide range of Senior School destinations at age 11. These are decided upon in partnership with parents and considering each child’s needs, interests and potential. Our pupils are frequently awarded Academic and Music Scholarships to schools such as Trent College, Repton School, Derby High School, Derby Grammar School and Denstone College.

In Year 5 and 6 the pupils are given the opportunity to take part in residential school holidays to such places as Wales, York, Edinburgh and London. Outward Bound holidays are also organised with an outdoor pursuits theme involving activities such as canoeing, abseiling and teambuilding exercises. These visits are optional, not compulsory, and are all well staffed.
