Music and Drama

Music plays an integral part of life at St Wystan’s. The emphasis is on practical music and many children develop high-level skills in this area. Every age group has access to the Music curriculum, from our Nursery children to our oldest pupils, where children are encouraged to take an active part in all music making.
Pupils in the Upper school can join the orchestra which performs in school concerts. There are three different choirs depending on age group and ability. These regularly perform for school audiences and around the local community. The school holds a House Music competition with categories from singing to ensemble and composition.
Instrumental lessons are available in all instruments and are taken by well-qualified peripatetic staff. Grade examinations are also taken regularly.
A competitive Music Scholarship is available; the successful applicant being expected to contribute to the musical life of the school.

Drama is taught through the English curriculum but we also have several Drama clubs after school which encourage the children to express themselves through dramatic activity. A strong tradition of drama has developed within St Wystan’s where the very youngest to the oldest children are given opportunities take part and showcase their talents.
Past productions have included HMS Pinafore, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Reluctant Dragon. There have also been numerous pantomimes where some parents and staff have also been able to take to the stage!
Our children are confident and uninhibited and frequently surprise us with their flexibility and potential. Pupils of all ages think nothing of walking out in front of their family and peers to show their talents, we are frequently complimented upon our pupil’s performances and their ability to shine.
